Innovation and sustainability: measures to improve the control of diffuse emissions into the atmosphere

In this article we will discuss...

The implementation of solutions such as conveyor belt covers and enclosures has become a key tool for controlling diffuse emissions in sectors such as mining, concrete manufacturing and waste management.

Royal Decree 100/2011 of January 28, which updates the Catalogue of Potentially Air Polluting Activities (APCA), establishes the obligation for operators of facilities included in said catalogue to minimize diffuse and channelled emissions by applying, whenever possible, the best available techniques (BAT) and by providing the necessary elements to comply with the provisions on emission control and dispersion.

The objective of diffuse emission control is to prevent or, when not possible, minimize the potential damage to people, the environment and property of any kind.

Despite the diversity of activities and processes that generate diffuse emissions —such as open-pit mining, aggregate processing, construction and demolition waste management, the production of concrete, gypsum, lime or ceramic materials, livestock farming, or wastewater treatment plants—, the main environmental issue is related to the management of dusty materials.

JLM Ingeniería solutions for diffuse emission reduction

At JLM Ingeniería we provide a series of technical principles for the proper management of dusty materials in waste treatment plants, aggregate facilities, concrete factories, mining operations or ceramic production plants. Depending on the process, the following measures are established:

Storage

• Protection of materials from wind action using containment walls, closed buildings or windbreak screens.
• Covering with tarpaulins and reducing the surface area exposed to the wind.
• Reducing the height of stockpiles.
• Compacting and maintaining an optimal level of humidity in the material to prevent dust formation.

Transport

• Conditioning and proper maintenance of access and circulation roads for vehicles and machinery, avoiding puddles, mud and dust emissions through road compaction and watering.
• Covering materials during transport.

Handling

• During loading and unloading operations, apply humidification, minimize drop height and carry out unloading in designated areas.
• Installation of dust reduction and collection systems.

Commitment to air quality

At JLM Ingeniería we actively work to reduce diffuse emissions into the atmosphere through the installation of conveyor belt covers, enclosure systems and dust collection equipment, thus achieving a significant improvement in air quality, lower operator exposure and reduced particle dispersion.
